1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?

the cover of Tatler usually consists of high contrast yet elegant typography within the cover.

Sans Serif - thinner font, suggests modesty and luxury  
Serif - bolder font, suggests power or status

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?

the cover lines appeal to the audience as it targets people of fashion and gossip. the catchy text on the cover help attract the audience and forces them to wanting to know more about that topic

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?

green- suggests nature also connoting to natural beauty

pastel pink, blue and white-  modest, soft colours highlights femininity and innocence/ purity


4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. the model, the mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)

the cover uses composition methods such as the rule of 3rds, to guide the viewers' eye across the page. they also highlight the main model by presenting high contrast to frame the main focus point.

1) What celebrities or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?

the model on the cover is Emma Weymouth, who is  classed as the first black woman who earned a upper class title

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?

it suggests that they show particular interest towards things such as fashion, beauty royal business gossips

3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.) 

usually the covers of Tatler represent people race and gender when it comes to cover models, however they primarily focus on upper classes or people of a higher status


4) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?

the main stereotypes usually revolve around women as it is what society normally relate them to when it comes to beauty and luxury. though some to most stereotypes where reinforced where they tend to sexualise female model, representing them as 'domestic goddesses', the modern Tatler subverts to to certain assumptions such as women owning a title of an elite class or being represented as strong, successful figures when it comes to women having their own careers and properties.  

Social and cultural contexts

1) What types of people are NOT featured in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')

middle to lower class people in society due to the original Tatler, that was released in 1709, targeted upper classes since lower classes not having a high literacy rate (enough to actually read the magazines)


2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain? 

it suggests their lifestyle is comfortable and usually romanticizes extreme levels of beauty and expenses 


3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler? 

the middle class as they cant afford a similar lifestyle


4) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler?





normally women of a higher class is featured in the covers
